There are a few things you should know about the mansion before you go. First of all, it is the oldest house in Salisbury. The Huston family owned the property from 1805 until 1881. It was part of Pemberton’s Good Will, a 357-acre farm. It was once the home of a physician who owned slaves. The museum houses a restored 1700s piano forte – one of only a few remaining in the world.

A gable-fronted Federal house, the Chanceford, was built in the center of Snow Hill, a commercial center for Worchester County. The mansion, along with its neighbors, set the standard for many other impressive Federal houses throughout the area. As a result, the Mansion served as a museum and showcased the history of the region. During the early nineteenth century, agricultural and cash crop production fueled the growth of these farms.

Poplar Hill Mansion is a rare early Salisbury house that was built between 1795 and 1805. It is also the largest Federal house on the Eastern Shore. It was built for Major Levin Handy, a local merchant who purchased the property in 1795. Hardy passed away before the house was finished, but Dr. John Huston completed the project in 1805. The Newport roots of the mansion are credited with the house’s sophistication.
